In 1980 following my government career I started my first small business. In 1990 I changed direction and concentrated my new business on supply of professional television products and my own manufactured television production products developed for Australian distribution.

Towards the end of the 90’s the company had developed an international competing digital Codec (acronym for Coder Decoder) for high quality audio distribution over telephone lines. With a strategic plan to expand into world markets, we opened an office in the USA and business grew rapidly. In 2001 we won the WA immerging exporter award – a great team effort.

Today the company continues to be an international leader in Codec development and supply.

During the past 32 years I have seen significant changes. It concerns me when I hear people that have been in business for 30 plus years say things like “I would never start another business with such staggering government interference, control and intrusive overheads that exist today”

Since 1991 I have been actively involved in Small Business issues and representation. I am currently Vice President of the Combined Small Business Alliance of WA or CoSBA. website www.cosba.com.au

CoSBA has a strong representative Board dedicated to minimising the many issues facing Small Business. During the course of last year CoSBA developed a policy position paper for all levels of government to better understand their impacts and to develop policy/regulations accordingly. The document have been present to the State Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business Liza Harvey and Federal opposition shadow minister for Small Business Bruce Billson. The Federal minister and all other key representatives have been sent copies.

CoSBA expects government to take this seriously and to produce policy which addresses the significant impost that Small Business currently has upon it.

I fully support significant changes to laws and regulations as outlined in the CoSBA document to give Small Business a chance to do what it does best and that is to be Australia’s largest employer without an oppressive and restrictive yoke around its neck.

The policy document can be downloaded here
